Superbowl XLI - Galloping to the Title
The weather was nasty, even for the snowbirds of Florida. A wet and wild night at Dolphin Stadium, it was a Super Bowl first. Tony Dungy of the Indianapolis
Colts and Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears made history in being the first two African American coaches to reach a Super Bowl together. It was broadcast in
232 countries and 33 languages from Dolphin Stadium to a viewing audience of an estimated 1 billion people. Besides that, the game certainly was not one
for the ages.

Peyton Manning was in solid form hitting 25 of 38 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown, while throwing one interception. After dismal post-season
appearances, this was finally the year that Peyton Manning earned his Super Bowl Ring. In talking about the victory, Manning said, "It's a great feeling
because I know how hard we've worked as a team. We've certainly worked in past years, also and it's been hard not only to lose in the playoffs but it's been
hard to watch the other teams hoist that Vince Lombardi trophy, knowing that maybe the other teams that have beaten you have won the Super Bowl. That's a
hard pill to swallow, kind of always watching and realizing how bad you want to be out there the next year."

The Indianapolis Colts finally got the monkey off their backs by beating the New England Patriots, a team which eliminated them in the playoffs throughout the
years. The Colts came from behind and stunned the New England Patriots with a victory that rocked the sports world. The Chicago Bears had them singing
the blues in New Orleans as they ended the Saints' very surprising and special season. The trouncing of the Patriots and the slaughter of the Saints paved
the way for these two teams to go head-to-head that rainy night in Florida.

As Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, and the rest of their teammates hoisted the trophy high into the air, this was a nightmare of a Super Bowl for the Chicago
Bears. The Bears defense blamed poor tackling more than anything else for its failure to slow the swift pounding of the Colts' feet down the field. The 430
yards the defense let slip from their grasp was the most lost all season except in St. Louis, when they gave up 433 yards to the Rams. "We just couldn't make
the plays we needed to make and do the tackling," said Brian Urlacher, a linebacker for the Bears. "We played the Cover Two and one of the weaknesses of a
Cover Two defense is the checkdowns. Peyton (Manning) knows that and he executed well. He threw a lot of checkdowns but really we needed to do a better
job of tackling."

The Bears took the loss with grace and dignity, turning their thoughts to the future and next year right after the game was over. Cornerback Charles Tillman
provided himself with a little extra motivation by staying on the field and watching the post-game celebration. "I wanted to see what it looked like because I
obviously don't know what it feels like," Tillman said. "Disappointment is my personal trainer."
